‘Chicken Frost’ by Don Shook

poems 'Chicken Frost' by Don Shook

The chicken crossed the road I heard.
Which was so silly, so absurd,
Especially for so dumb a bird.

But when she started to come back
She met an eighteen-wheeler Mack
That smacked her with a great big whack!

Then squawking, flapping in the air
The chicken cried out in despair,
“Why did I journey over there?”

The moral is if where you’ve been
Is safe and sound, remember then,
Stay there and the road not take, hen.

Don Shook, past president of the Fort Worth Poetry Society, was also founder and head of The Actors Company, one of the nation’s leading theater companies. He is a writer, actor, director and producer who has performed in theatre, film and television across the country, including an opera performance at Carnegie Hall,  He is the author of a recently published novel “Bluehole” and three poetry books, “Sheep Got Teeth”, “Sheep Got Teeth Too” and “Sheep Still Got Teeth”, and was selected as 2009 Senior Poet Laureate of Texas.

    COOPED UP TOO LONG
    — James Ph. Kotsybar

    The spirit of adventuring
    is really not so dumb a thing;
    for her it was no longer spring.

    No one had ever thought her brave.
    “You’re just a chicken,” they would rave.
    Her reputation she would save.

    So venturing from her abode,
    she braced for a true episode
    and valiantly she crossed the road

    It wasn’t that she left her den;
    the fault encountered by this hen
    was trying to go back again.

    I noticed that according to the clocks that register when a post was made and when my comment was made, I’ve either time travelled or the laws of cause and effect have broken down.
    (I commented a full six hours before the post was made.)

    Hi James,

    Thanks!

    I’ll check with our tech guy. If you have any ideas (any experience on WordPress?) on how to fix I would be interested.

    Evan
