‘Summer Showers in the African Savanna’ by Nivedita Karthik

poems 'Summer Showers in the African Savanna' by Nivedita Karthik

Slowly yet steadily the heat starts to soar
as the sun’s first rays glimmer in the east sky.
With no breeze to cool down the forest floor
the temperature reached an all-new high.

Nothing stirred in the dry heat of the day
and lions lay panting in the shade of the trees.
As leaves turned brown and flowers withered away
The only sound was the drone of the bees.

Then all of a sudden storm clouds gathered
menacing and gloomy and dark and gray.
Thunder boomed, lightning forked and rain battered
leaving everything in total disarray.

Nivedita Karthik is a graduate in Integrated Immunology from the University of Oxford who likes reading books and travelling. She is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer and has given many performances. She loves any form of creative writing (especially poems) and writes them whenever she can.
