The Mystery That Is You

The gasping hulks of rusted wrecks that share
with eyeless scavengers the mysteries
of Styxlike depths; the lecherous affair
of heaving earth expelling centuries
of fetal carbons from its fiery womb;
grotesque microbic warriors, whose fields
of battle on a wisp of breath consume
great armies, more than all the fallen shields
of kingdoms past; the artisans of stone
and bow, whose boundless hunger would betray
them to a shifting desert bed, where bone
and centuries are ground to chalky gray.
Unseen, like these, the passions that you stirred:
forever in my soul are they interred.

Intoxicating Lover

A reverie is misted on my mind
like pollen whisked from purple nectaries.

Her smile is lustrous, white, as if designed
by deities to cap the churning seas.

The musky bronze perfection of her skin
is closer now, to stir a witch’s brew
of sybaritic turbulence within
me, warming, wooing, lifting me anew
on lips aflame with honeysuckle wine
from Dionysus’ vaults. And then I hear
her voice, Sirenic strains, and I align
myself with starry musings that appear
upon her presence and enliven me
with blissful visions of our destiny.

You weave a rich tapestry of imagery here, Paul, and I admire the way you don’t allow the fervent language to run away with you. Two remarkable pieces of exactly the right length. I enjoyed them both a lot. Thanks.

Paul, these are two excellent poems of love and romance that are so appropriate for the season, since they are filled with heartwarming depths of emotions that are compelling and evocative.

These are really great examples of extended enjambment. The ten closing lines of “Intoxicating Lover” are like a dizzying carousel ride.

These are marvelous and mesmerizing poems! You’ve used ingenious, visual extended metaphor (especially in the first one) to make the most deeply-emotional and yet non-mushy portrayals of being in love that I think I’ve ever read. “Where bone and centuries are ground to chalky gray” is my favorite phrase.

“The Mystery” presents most unexpected images for the unseen feelings in love, Paul, and you follow these up admirably with the final rhymes. “Interred” and “stirred” well accompany the scenes you evoke, to give an unsettling sense of the “you” who is the mystery.

There’s further description in “Intoxicating Lover,” and I for one was glad finally to see the “blissful visions of our destiny” inspired by hearing her voice. But then you had referred to it as “Sirenic strains,” which maintains the dangerous character of the love overall.

These are two love poems that foreground a mysterious uncertainty of mood.

Two very different love poems, the latter very sensual, the former comparing love to eternity rather than beauty, per se. I enjoyed both, but Intoxicating Lover is the one that’s going to get you brownie points on Valentine’s Day.

    Thanks for the reads, Paul
