‘For My Grandfather’: A Poem by Amadeus V.

For My Grandfather

While Sharpton praised low bandits for their grace,
And Barack preached self-pity with pure glee,
You always taught the simple truth of race.
While Black Lives Matter set Pan’s chaos free,
Though CRT commands us to erase
The common crook’s complete complicity,
The polis’s servants will give me a chance
If I show respect, and keep up my pants.

Amadeus V. is a student and poet. His writing has appeared in Matchfires and his chapbook Kingston Journal.

I like the contrast of your grandfather’s straight talk with the much-bruited “wisdom” of those political leaders the media chooses to emphasize. The consonance in lines 5 and 6 flows very nicely, albeit I think perhaps at the expense of a little vagueness in your meaning. I would like line 6 better if you ended it with “cupidity” instead of “complicity,” as it continues the Greco-Roman metaphor you established, and accurately describes how BLM, because of CRT, commands us to ignore the violence, stealing and looting because they are just taking what’s owed them. No complaints about the wryly witty couplet you wrap it all up with, though. Very nice.

Concise, well written statement that is all too relevant at the moment.

I wasn’t expecting that couplet at the end . Well done.

I would like to be such a grandfather.
