‘The Joyful Warrior’: A Poem for Charlie Kirk by Adam Wasem

Charlie Kirk (Gage Skidmore)

Charlie Kirk (Gage Skidmore)

.

Joyful Warrior

—for Charlie

Beloved Charlie will lie in state
At rest, beyond the reckless hate
That roils the souls of the wicked, massing
To mock and celebrate his passing.

With nimble mind and agile tongue,
Self-schooled, he dared to school the young
In what their schooling sorely lacked:
A love of country based in fact,
Of God, the dictates of His laws—
The happiest warrior for His cause.

Unfazed by threats, again and again
He strode into the lions’ den
To face down all the Marxist creeds
That festered there like evil weeds
Implanted only to destroy—
Attacks only increased his joy:
A joy that shone so blinding bright
We had scant measure for its light
Except by contrast with the dark
That fell when he fell, grim and stark.

Yet in that dark, across the world
Rise flags of liberty, unfurled
To honor Charlie’s love of life,
Of hope of country free from strife
With problems calmly talked about,
Where violence can’t crowd reason out,
Illumined by a million flames
At vigils, burning in his name.

Forever in our memory now
He’ll live; his teaching will endow
Whole generations with the tools
To stand their ground, refuting fools.
No matter how they spin and lie,
His bold, brave faith will never die,
And when evil comes to cast its pall
Remember his lesson for us all:
When demons take aim to do us in
Meet death, like him, with a joyful grin.

Adam, this deeply affectionate elegy certainly shows you are one of the many who now say, “We are Charlie.” He faced the battle with joy and faith, “with nimble mind and agile tongue,” with hope and reason, love of country and love of God. Many thanks for putting together this beautiful tribute, reminding us of more.

Thank you, Margaret. I tried to do justice to Charlie as I perceived him: Bold, brilliant, energetic and brave. And yes, as a fellow Christian deeply grieved in Spirit by his martyrdom, I felt the least I could do was try to memorialize his triumph.

Adam, a beautiful tribute to a man whose legacy will live on; his ideology, a movement that has aroused the hearts of those seeking ‘truth’.
Thank you for your insightful poem.

The influence of most people’s lives shrinks when they die. Charlie’s has exploded; almost instantly, he’s become a modern saint. It’s the most miraculous thing I’ve ever witnessed. Lack of a tribute would have been shirking my duty as a Christian and an American.

Adam, what a great elegant elegy for someone who only sought to inform, debate, and speak freely. We often pay a price for truth, yet truth shall ultimately triumph over the evildoers. I can feel your passion and sincerity in your wonderful ode to Charlie!

Blessed are the peacemakers, and doubly so when they’re martyred for it. I can only hope my passion and sincerity can touch as many as possible. Thank you very much, Roy.

I found this uplifting, a touching tribute that focuses on the good Charlie did and urging the reader to virtue. The allusion to Wordsworth’s poem is apt; you give us an example to follow by showing.
