A Panegyric on the Nativity

Babies are cool
In spite of the drool
And inordinate stool.
Babies are cool.

Babies are fat
And better for that,
To pinch and poke at.
Babies are fat.

Babies are silly:
Wailing willy-nilly
(Their drawers are frilly).
Babies are silly.

Babies are slobbery—
Which allows them robbery
Of hearts all throbbery.
Babies are slobbery.

Babies are odorous,
Their pants malodorous,
And changing them? Onerous.
Babies are odorous.

Mothers are sweet,
Kissing infant feet,
Nesting on a loveseat.
Mothers are sweet.

Moms with their tots?
Like angels. Apricots
Are not sweeter. Please: lots
More moms with tots.

Moms are sweetcool.
(I’d be their feetstool
They teach such a sweet school)
Moms are sweetcool.

A tot was born cool
One evening, one Yule—
When the ghoul and the fool
Were made miniscule—
When Mom (born cherrysweet)
Kissed infant feet
In winter sleet
(The baby born cool,
One evening, one Yule).

nice – here’s our daughter’s analogous infant song:

What makes babies smell so subtle?
what makes babies smell so sweet?
    Weebies, weebies, weebies, weebies,
    smell like some delicious treat.

How much does your Daddy love you?
what can babies do with that?
Love from daddies never made a
    baby milky, full or fat.

How much does your Mommy love you?
babies all can do with that.
Love from Mommy makes a baby
    happy, milky, full, and fat.

    summer 1986.

That was great, Clark. So imaginative, and with so little leeway per line.

My favourite stanza is the ‘odorous’ one – which probably says a lot about me.

    Thanks for the read.

Cool rhymes, Clark, working through everything about babies all the way to the most miraculous birth.
