Living Psalm
—February, 1997
A tempest rages on within my soul,
And tears flow freely down my troubled face,
I know that You alone can make me whole,
But stubbornly I do not seek Your grace.
I storm outside, sight blurred by falling tears;
The glorious verdure captivates my eye,
The robin’s warbling overwhelms my fears,
As does the brilliance of the cloudless sky.
The squirrels force a slow, reluctant smile,
The flowers lift the burdens from my heart;
I know that You are working all the while
This joyous, peaceful feeling to impart.
The scene before me is a living Psalm;
I look on You, my Lord, and all is calm.
Natural Remedies
Though many folks unwind their minds with daiquiris and juleps,
For me, retreat to earth’s embrace is far more expeditious—
The dew-drenched dawn, resplendent with bright, pirouetting tulips;
The noonday sun whose fierceness makes the slightest shade auspicious;
Subliminal suggestions—the cuneiform of birds:
Their skyward soaring; flitting flights; their flocking in the trees
Whose leafy tessellations caption wild wind’s airy words—
The constant, shifting chorus of the earth sets me at ease.
As I immerse myself in this, of one thing I feel sure:
All medicine’s placebo; this is tantamount to cure!
