"Conversation at the Table" by Louise Breslau

"Conversation at the Table" by Louise Breslau

Dialogue Discernment

One critical but rarely mentioned facet,
Of skills required for fine communication,
Is sensing when somebody makes it tacit,
That they would like to cease a conversation.

Eternal Incongruence

A parent’s basic instinct is to still
Maintain at least a modicum of sway.
A grown kid’s greatest impulse always will
Be wanting to do everything their way.

Reasons for Interruptions

Some interrupt for fear they’ll lose a thought,
While others lack routine impulse control.
They realize that isn’t what we’re taught,
But swear the cut-offs never are a goal.

More folks claim they’re just parts of conversations,
Or merely habits — but they all convey —
Apparent thought those blurted presentations,
Are more important than what you might say.

Russel Winick started writing poetry after ending a long legal career. He resides in Naperville, Illinois.
