The Nightingale in a Dream
by Gavrila Derzhavin (1743 – 1816)
translated from Russian by Kevin Rainbow
As I slept high on a hill,
Nightingale, thy voice I harked;
In my deepest slumber still
By my soul ’twas clearly marked:
Sounding and resounding after,
Now with sorrow, now with laughter,
From a distance it was heard;
And within Callisto’s arms
Songs and sighings, soughs and charms,
In sweet sleep more sweetness stirred.
If by my demise, somehow,
In dull sleep that knows no end,
Ah! these songs that I hear now,
Be not likewise present then;
And the means of hearing mirth,
Dances, game and fame ring forth,
Cannot but within me fail—
Let me hold this life more dear,
Kiss my sweetheart more and hear
Songs sung by the nightingale.

В слухе издалече он;
Эти песни слышны мне;
This Land
by Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966)
translated from Russian by Kevin Rainbow
This land is not my native one,
But never leaves the memory;
This land where gently icy run
Unsalty waters in its sea.
Its sand more white than chalk, and where
Luxurious air is drunk, like wine;
The sunset hour displaying bare
The rosy form of many a pine.
Such a sunset in waves of ether,
I cannot tell what meets its end—
The day, the world, or if some deeper
Mystery fills my soul again.

The Fountain
by Fyodor Tyutchev (1803 -1873)
translated from Russian by Kevin Rainbow
Look, as a living cloud on high,
The fountain in its radiance swirls,
Shows flame and moistured smoke unfurls
Fragmented in the day’s bright eye.
To heaven it arose, a ray,
To touch the peak of perfect lust.
But soon again, as fiery dust,
Was doomed back down to earth’s sad clay.
O fountain of death-destined thought!
O fountain loth to rest, what force
Of some strange law directs your course
And makes a troubled life your lot?
You thrust to heaven in greedy flight!
But a hand fatal and unseen
Refracting your persistent beam
Throws it, as mist, down from that height!

Фонтан сияющий клубится;
