SCP Poetry Symposium 2020—“A Celebration of Meter and Rhyme”

NOTE: This event has been canceled due to the CCP virus (COVID-19) pandemic. A new online SCP Symposium has been planned. The details of the online symposium will be available here on May 1.

Register to Attend

This is a free event with door prizes meant to encourage the appreciation and writing of classical poetry. Register for the event by emailing [email protected] with the subject line “Symposium.” Specify which sessions you will attend. Attendees are expected to dress business casual. If registering for the Classical Poetry Master Class, bring a notebook and something to write with. Attendees must register no later than May 15. The size of the venue is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Register to Read or Speak

—Anyone can apply to read poetry or speak on the topic of classical poetry (as long as it is within the spirit of “A Celebration of Meter and Rhyme”).

—Email what you propose to read, whether poetry or a speech, to [email protected]. All those who speak are expected to begin by reading a poem or poetry excerpt by a great poet of the past (Romantic period or earlier), followed by metered and/or rhyming poetry of your own or other’s. If your proposal is accepted, you will be granted a slot of between 5 and 15 minutes. You must register no later than May 15.

—If you are speaking at the event, you may bring copies of your book for sale. If you bring more than one book, we cannot guarantee space for display.

 

Schedule

Session 1

9 – 10am: Meet and greet with coffee, tea, and cookies
10 am – 12 noon: Classical Poetry Master Class with A.M. Juster
(Through readings of classic and contemporary poems and workshopping, A.M. Juster looks at the use of metaphor as an important tool that usually gets little attention.)

Session 2

1 – 1:50pm China’s Two Greatest Poets (Li Bai and Du Fu), a lecture with Professor Chunlin Li
2 – 4pm Poetry Readings

Session 3

4:15 – 6pm Poetry Readings
