‘Dusk’: A Poem by C. Walker

Dusk

Come down! you fading orb of heat,
__Come down, and rest your head,
I watched you in your slow defeat;
__This day you had is dead.

What marvel! that you lived at all,
__What marvel, that we share,
This day enlightened by your fall
__Was worth my every care.

But see! the rays embark with rage;
__But see, we’re not yet done,
For though we all succumb to age,
__This age is what we’ve won.

At last! this dusk shall prod to dawn,
__At last, we lived, we died;
What came with heart is not yet gone,
__Tomorrow—be my guide.

    Very fun to read, but fun was not the point. Plenty to chew on with one.

    Absolutely dripping with personification, all to good effect.

    Outstanding. They don’t make ’em like this very often any more. The muse sings righr through every verse.
