The Valley
_Why are there valleys?
They’re really not my thing.
_Mainly it’s because
Of all the pain they bring.
_It’s dark, I stumble,
I’ve fallen many times.
_Makes me start to think
This mountain can’t be climbed.
_The icy river
That is beneath my feet,
_Each day it deepens
From all the times I weep.
_Your light may shine bright
Upon the mountaintop.
_Here at the bottom,
The shadow’s all I’ve got.
_And like this valley,
I’m feeling really low.
_But the times like these,
They’re used to help me grow.
_If I concentrate
And focus just on me,
_I will never learn
Answers I won’t see.
_If I look instead
To where my help comes from,
_I can make the climb.
Watch out, peak, here I come!
_So as I keep on,
One foot and then the next.
_It is my resolve
That is put to the test.
_I look out ahead,
Make sure it’s safe to cross.
_Oh, God, please help me!
I think I may be lost.
_“No. Just keep going.”
I hear it in my heart.
_“You’re right at the top,
You’ve done the hardest part.”
_One thing you should learn,
In pain you will not stay.
_Just remember this,
Each and every day:
_To appreciate,
To fathom, or to know,
_The highest of highs,
You have to have the lows.
