Spring Song

Spring sings through the woods, her own special song
Sometimes short ’n’ sweet and sometimes too long.
It wafts through the branches, it hums in the trees
It starts up the dancing of flowers and leaves.

With dandelion choirs in yellow and gold
The buttercups join in, as in days of old.
And daisies, oh daisies, they sway as they sing
While pink-flowered weeds in the grass do their thing.

And in the dark places you’ll hear a low hum
Cold wind on green mosses is playing a drum.
The river it ripples and splashes and flows
And bees of all sizes buzz zithers, you know.

And through the whole season as Spring sings her song
Time with his scythe is just moving along.

Rohini, this is beautiful spring imagery with a fascinating abrupt way to end the poem with a cutting surprise.

Thank you Roy. I’m glad you liked that last twist. I feared the poem may be too saccharine if I didn’t give it a sharp ending. And that is so typical of Spring weather too.

I enjoyed this sweet spring song but especially the surprising last line which satisfied my love of a twist at the end of a poem, whether it was meant that way or not?

Thanks so much, Norma. Yes that ending was intended.

Very special use of song meter, Rohini. The rhythm is naturally attuned to music used for a variety of quatrain lyrics. Emotion can be varied by dynamics or by expression in performance. But because you make this a sonnet, the last quatrain is cut off. Doesn’t matter much in a less musical sonnet, but here it slices the end abruptly, just like Time with his scythe in the word meaning perspective of your poem.

Thank you, Margaret. I don’t/can’t sing, so I didn’t think of it as a song. But I do see that it could work. What fun if someone could set it to music!

A deceptively simple poem with some wonderful imagery – I particularly liked the ‘dandelion choirs in yellow and gold’.

And then there’s the final couplet, reminding us that although the moment of spring is to be cherished, time and tide is waiting for no one.

    Thanks for the read, Rohini.

Thanks for reading it Paul. I see all these lovely sights along the walking trails near the river here in BC, Canada and a poem starts buzzing in my head! I am pleased that so many have received that last line as it’s meant to be – a slight shock after all that pretty imagery. 🙂

What a lovely piece! The imagery like a song, laced in a fragrant spring breeze; oh how welcoming!
